How should I place the arrangement?
Okay, here's some concised UV theory. The sun's rays are strongest at the equator. The sun is most directly overhead and UV rays travel the least distance through the atmosphere to reach our land. This is bad news for artificial flowers. Also, the sun is at its highest intensity around noon. In the early morning and late afternoon, the sun's rays pass through the atmosphere at an angle and their intensity is greatly reduced.
Also, surfaces such as sand, cement flooring, grass, or water can reflect much of the UV radiation that reaches them. Because of this reflection, UV intensity can be deceptively high even in shaded areas. So beware. Now we know when it is not the best time to expose the silk flowers to natural light, let's proceed further:
NATURAL LIGHTING (BY THE WINDOWS)
Place the arrangement at spots where they will receive natural light. Remember, silk flowers are made of special fabrics, so the flowers' inherent colour quality will be enhanced by natural light. Use your fingers to draw across the petals and you will notice that they are indeed very thin - just like pieces of quality tracing paper! This transparancy of the fabrics allows natural light to illuminate and at the sametime permeate to all the other pieces within the bouquet. If you have a window, please observe the subtle changes in colour saturations and hue as the sun rises and sets!
From our experience, leaving the silk flower by the windows day and night will cause colour fadings in less than a year.
NATURAL LIGHTING (OUTDOOR SETTINGS)
So, is it alright to put the arrangement outdoor? Yes - but only for a very short while. I am sure you would like your guests to see what wonderful arrangements you have ordered from Julie Floral! They can add some sparks to a special occasion, or dress up certain areas, or just place them somewhere for a knockout break-the-ice effect. Since they are made of fabric, leaving them in the open for days at a stretch might be too much. Rain, the evening dew and sunlight will definitely shift the silk flowers' colour balance.
Our advice is to bring the silk flowers indoor as soon as the party is over!
ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING
For indoor lighting, placing the silk flowers at least 4 feet below warm light or a downlight will also bring out the best from them. If the downlight is still too bright, try placing a frosted glass on the downlight. This diffuses the intensity, and at the same time brings out the softness of the silk flower's colour. Some homes are illuminated by concealed (reflected) energy-saving lamps, and at the same time have a few downlights scattered around the concealed ceiling. For this kind of lighting system, place the silk flowers below the downlight. Enjoy.
